The Gunnery Rooms

In the ancient fortifications, the visual history of Genoa
and its iconic lighthouse

The fortifications at the foot of the lighthouse, with their architectural quality and charm, are certainly worth a visit. The tour represents an opportunity to retrace the history of the Lighthouse, especially from an iconographic point of view. It is, in fact, quite unique that historically, the images of the city have always identified it with its lighthouse, a construction that has been a longstanding symbol of the city, without interruption. From the earliest representations on maps dating back to the early 1400s to the present day, Genoa has been represented by its lighthouse, an unequivocal landmark.

The first part of the tour unfolds through a series of rooms known as ‘The Gunnery Rooms’, part of the ancient fortifications erected on several occasions to defend the city of Genoa (1626-1639 with subsequent changes made by the Savoy family in the 19th century), given their ideal strategic position from where the artillery could defend the port’s entrance and ward off enemy ships. At the same time, the fortress also guarded the city’s west entrance. In the 19th century, these rooms featured embrasures overlooking the route that led to the monumental ‘Porta Nuova’ (New Gate) built by the Savoys in 1831.
